i want to b able to use thinning shears myself so i can update my hair whenever i need to without going to a salon. how do u learn? is it hard? is it easy to screw up your hair? i found a pair i think i want but i just need to know how to use them.

Its not necessarily hard to use them…you just have to know how far from scalp you need to thin. If you do it to close you will have a huge mess on your hands and possibly hairs that stick up from your head. All thinning shears are different….they cut differently, the amount of hair cut can vary, and you should have a basic understanding on how you are supposed to use them…. so be mindful of that. You learn by practicing, its not hard once you learn, and it is highly likely that you can screw up your hair if you don't know what you are doing.

Do a thinning shear search on google…many professional stylist sites have lots of info on techniques and basic knowledge of the subject.

I recommend leaving it up to a professionals.

Dear god hon do not try to do that. You'll wind up with gapped up hair. It's VERY easy to ruin your hair if you don't know what you're doing. Thinning shears aren't used for "updating" hair, it's for texturizing ends, layers, and thinning out too thick hair. It's only necessary to get your hair cut with thinning shears every 4 to 6 months or so at best, don't try it! Just get your hair thinned or texturized when you're at the salon getting your hair trimmed!!!!!
I've been using thinning shears for many months and I still don't feel totally comfortable with them yet!

Just for the sake of arguing, the answerer at the bottom is wrong. Texturizing shears and thinning shears are the same thing - there are different sizes of these shears and some people think channeling shears are the only ones called texturizing shears. It's all the same, dear.

i use them all the time…but then again i'm the type of person who doesn't get too worked up over my screwed up hair cuts…hair grows back…right?

What i do use all the time is the thinning razors…good luck….be adventurous…give it a try.

I thin my hair about once every three weeks. My hair tends to be extremely thick, coarse and curly and it grows fast too. I tend to be pretty good with fixing my own hair (relaxing, chemically straitening, coloring, cutting). If you do not feel you can thin your hair well, don't try. But if you do take your time and section your hair.

Try searching youtube for how to videos and search online and in stores for different thinning shears.

And by the way, there is a BIG difference between thinning shears and texturizing shears.
