What no doubt was thought up as a “fun” ad campaign has turned into accusations of discrimination.

Last week, advertisements ran offering “free Zoo entry for all rangas” during the school holidays. “Ranga” — an abbreviation of orangutan — is a common nickname for redheads.

“We seem to be getting quite a bit of a negative reaction to that request,” said Zoos SA’s director of conservation programs Kevin Evans.

He acknowledged that he didn’t think people whould take offense to the ads: “People are possibly more sensitive about it than we thought,” he said. “We have a campaign over the school holidays because of orangutans being an endangered species – and so are human redheads,” Evans said. Less than 2 percent of humans have red hair.

“Because of the way people move around these days, the genes that carry redheads are breeding out to brunettes and blondes,” Evans said. “Eventually it looks like they are going to be extinct as well.”

If hair color is cheaper than zoo admission, you might want to rush out to your stylist and her toshiba scissors, as dyed red hair will qualify, and – in spite of the outcry – the zoo will continue to offer free entry to people with red hair for the next two weeks to raise awareness about orangutans being endangered in the wild.

Turns out your hair might actually be your greatest asset - in this case!

For this look – as part of his award winning color portfolio collection.John Simpson of Lewis Salon put down his toshiba scissors and took up his coloring brush instead. Simpson recently won the Best Haircolor award from the Professional Beauty Association during the 19th annual North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) – the color at left is from his award-winning collection, in which he wove different “stories” of texture and color.
Simpson, from Pittsburgh, PA, will be one of our next presenters for TheCuttingEdgeHairShow.com
He used brilliant blondes, matte browns and many more techniques to create “something that not only inspires others” but also re-inspired him to get creative with his work. His collection features several photographs of different cuts, color, and style combinations. He showed that often, amazing looks can be created without specific use of shears – hair can be colored and styled expertly!
In the journey from the idea, through the creation of the line, and finally to the award, he said his biggest challenge was to make sure he actually followed through and “did it!”

There’s a new genre of TV, and it’s known as “guilty TV.” One series that falls into this category is the new “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” on Bravo (9 p.m. Thursdays). We know. Leave it to Bravo to create more guilty pleasure TV.

Tabatha was a scissors-wielding contestant on the first season of “Shear Genius,” and she was obviously irresistable on some level to viewers and network execs alike, considering they gave her her own show.

“Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” involves Tab going into failing hair salons, assessing what may be happening to make these salons fail, taking the businesses over, and then giving the salon, employees and owner a re-do in hopes of saving the business. There’s no-telling what she’ll do – you may see her upgrading scissors to perfectly sharp Toshiba scissors, or telling a salon owner NOT to take a nap on the massage table during business hours (we’re not making that one up!).

There have been hairdressers who have meltdowns right there in the salon, and salon owners who are such control freaks that they don’t even allow their staff to answer the telephone without having memorized a pre-approved phone script

It’s all drama and it’s all good – if a bit guilty.

At one salon in Canada, you’ll be treated to more than a cut with, say, some quality Toshiba scissors! You’ll be in for some live entertainment, as well. You might be able to guess the type of entertainment from the sign in the window: “Appearing today: Elvis.” But it would probably still be a bit startling when the salon owners and staff break into song and dance!

When co-owner Victoria Rau was not satisfied with the management style at the salons where she previously worked, she decided to start her own business. She teamed up with longtime a longtime friend, a community theater actor who had been laid off by the public library. Neither anticipated that Platis’ secret weapon would give their shop an edge over the competition.

“At first, we were just running a salon. Then there were some days where I’d get antsy and I just starting doing things,” Platis said. “And people enjoyed it. So we said, ‘You know what? Why don’t we just start cutting hair and doing entertainment?’ “

Eight months later, the dancing, singing and impersonations have become a staple at the local salon.

“Whenever Frank gets the whim and I hear everybody cracking up, I know what’s going on,” Rau said. “I turn around and he’s dancing and imitating Elvis Presley.”

Would you care for a little Elvis with your haircut?!
