So you want to learn how to do a layered haircut for your clients but have no idea where to start? Check out these hair cutting tips on layered haircuts and you will see just how simple and easy a long layered hairstyle can be.
Start with sectioning the layered haircut and work on the back section first, overdirect and bring everything back towards you.
Cut straight across at the bottom to remove length, then use point cutting to achieve the long layered hairstyle as it adds texture and reduces weight.
Hair Cutting Tip: Be sure to establish overall length *BEFORE* beginning layering process, by removing length at the sides as well as the very bottom.
Once you get the hair to the length that you want it to be, you can start creating your layers.
To begin the layering of the long hairstyle, start with the back section and work your way around the head. You can either go from left to right, or right to left its up to you, just make sure that whatever method you use, you can achieve balance with the final layered haircut.
Hair Cutting Tip: Build a foundation in either direction in a structured manner, as in the end you can get a bit more creative and be able to freestyle with your scissors. Its up to you to train your eye in seeing the weight, and really taking any finished layered hairstyle to the next level.
Continue layering by taking small sections of previously-cut hair as a guide and the following it through, and continuously point cutting.
Next, create a horseshoe shape parting and overdirect the hair forward and start taking a little bit more weight off of the front to achieve the layered haircut effect. Then bring everything from the front to the back, and to get more height, overdirect the hair and take more weight of in the crown.

(Part 2: This male client has very thick hair but the trechnique used on him sculpts out a shape as well as remove weight in one swift action. Features and details are emphasized at the fringe, frontal two corners, side areas between ears and eyes, top frontal section and back of crown area,. After a final rinse and blow dry with hands, the details are further fine tuned with an inversion technique which was used at the beginning. Notice there is no excessive use of the thinning sissors. Techniques used are honed from years of experience based on the demands of the clients. Everything is minimised, ‘short-cutted’ and straight to the point yet a distinctive identity is created)
The hair industry is in a rut and too much emphasis is placed on structured learning and on dated cutting techniques. The world of hairdressing relies too heavily on lines, angles, surfaces and solids. What about the internal structure of the hair? That part props up a hairstyle and gives it a unique identity and is the area attention should be focused on. When the surface of the finished hair cut is smooth it simply serves to sell the colour – nothing else! As a hairstylist why would you want to cut the same hairstyle day in day out like everyone else? Then what happens when the client asks for something different and you find yourself making excuses that it should not be done because of the face shape, head shape, texture and volume is not appropriate for it? See yourself in such a situation? The truth is you have been taught with fear because the trainers that have been available to you till now, these people themselves have been taught in the same manner. They tell you – just follow the book and do not ask questions because they have not been taught to think out of the box! You are told that your job is done if you meticulously follow their steps:)! Every single client’s hair has a special feature to sell so why not sell it with techniques that are created to bring out those features which the client can appreciate well? You can master these techniques now and charge more! What have you done with your own input to make your hairstyles unique? It is time to re-think your cutting skills. To create a unique result it needs to be reconstructed with extraordinary texturing techniques. The bob style shown in this video need not be boring as you can customize the final result. When this method is applied correctly it is like removing a real thick wintercoat, the flow and movement is created without the reckless use of the thinning scissors or the razor. Using only those two tools is thoughtless and lacks creativity. Which if used in this case will give a mediocre result. That would result in too much hair loss and control. This technique that I use is fast, effective and observable. As I mentioned in my other video we are a hair salon and a hair school. There is no re-learning or re-hash of hand held angles and line work steps taught by countless trainers elsewhere, locally or in the world. You will not learn things you have learned before. You get to keep your existing foundation knowledge and quickly adapt and apply new found techniques into real world practice. The client needs to watch how much work you put into their cut, not simple techniques if you want them to pay more. Let them see your creation as it takes shape like you are working and chiselling away on a sculpture. The freedom and power of expression is back in your hands- not strict rules.
Conventional bobs work well for caucasians but not all asians take the look well. The secret to a good haircut lies in the ability to deconstruct and re-arrange the internal texture thus it props up the overall style, gives it ease of movement, a lived-in look and a get up and go simplicity.
If you are just someone looking for an extraordinary haircut you have come to the right salon. If you are a hairstylist looking to better your skills and earn more, do come and speak to us. Classes are conducted LIVE not by video. We can customise classes according to your individual styles and preferences.
