Tabatha’s Salon Takeover made a stop in Mission Viejo as they dropped at A Star is Born, a children salon owned by Mission Viejo resident Joy Brandell.

A Star is Born is a warm and friendly salon for kids of all ages. With over 26-years of experience, this bustling, kid friendly shop has a little something for everyone. First timers are awarded a first haircut certificate, a picture and a lock of their hair.

Tabatha doesn’t enjoy kids’ company and salon owner Joy created a huge challenge for Tabatha by admitting she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to save her salon.

Ever since her parents passed away, Joy had lost all the passion and drive for her once popular children salon. She had checked out and so had her staff – they didn’t like doing hair and they didn’t like kids.

To make matters worse, Joy expanded to do adult clients in the same space but no one was showing up, and the salon had become dirty and rundown. Episode 9 of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover 3 dealt on how Tabatha was able to reignite this owner’s passion for her business and her staff’s passion for doing children hair.

Tabatha mentions on her blog:

Working in a kids’ salon is hard. It is a specialty, but it doesn’t give you a free pass to do crap work and not care about your profession or the clients. The staff seemed to not give a damn except surprisingly Rosa the youngest of the group. She wanted to learn and wanted help. Even the reopening day was so anti-climactic for me, because most of the staff all seemed to hate it.

Tabatha Coffey made a visit to bQute: Palmdale, CA during episode 7 of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover Season 3. This salon was disorganized and delusional, no wonder its business was not great.

Tabatha has to fix an out-of-control staff and a marriage on the brink, and turn this low-rent beauty shop into a high-end salon.

When Tabatha visited bQute, she realized the salon not only did hair but it also had a mortgage broker, travel agency, legal services, hideous clothes, shoes, and bags. She realized the two owners had no idea about their primary business.

Tabatha with Shannon and Frank

bQute owners – Shannon and Frank Peters are newlyweds and new business partners in the multi-cultural salon they opened together. But their salon was already struggling and their marriage is cracking under the stress of trying to save it.

Frank was an ineffective manager because he split his focus between five different businesses – not to mention he was not a hairdresser. Shannon didn’t want to manage, but won’t allow her husband to be the boss.

There was no management or leadership in the salon at all, and it was beyond clear how out of control things were. Tabatha was amazed bQute was still open after watching the behavior of the staff, the complaints the clients had, the lack of respect and the fighting.

Tabatha had to keep her sane in this disorganized salon and save Shannon and Frank’s business and their relationship. To do so, she organized a desert bonding trip where the owners and staff had to work in groups, thereby making them work as a unit.

She also changed the interiors of the salon and advised the staff on effective client relationships. She gave them a wakeup call since there was a lack of respect and teamwork.

In the end, the salon renovation looked great, staff started to work as a team and Tabatha could see the marriage and business of Frank and Shannon doing well.

Avanti Salon Boston

Tabathas Salon Takeover Season 3 is getting more and more exciting as it covers more salons. Last night was Episode 5 of the reality show in which Tabatha Coffey visited Avanti Salon in Boston.

Tabatha had to confront an insubordinate staff and a push-over owner who thought the salon should run itself. However, Tabatha had to toughen up salon owner Alex to change Avanti into a high-end salon worthy of Newbury Street.

In Tabatha’s words:

Avanti salon was in a prime location, not a bad looking salon, but it lacked leadership, rules, structure, teamwork, and accountability. Stylists were doing whatever they wanted, assistants were doing nothing. I really felt like I was starting to break through to the staff, but I was having a problem with Alex. He just wasn’t stepping up and being a leader.

Avanti Salon Owner Alex with Tabatha

Alex Iacobacci, owner of Avanti, had ignored his responsibilities and let his stylists run wild in his rundown Newbury Street salon. Their unprofessional behavior had driven away the high-end clientele, leaving the salon broke. Tabatha had to work hard and challenged them to change their unprofessional ways and strive to make their salon worthy of the “Best of Boston” list.

Tabatha had to work hard to fix the salon business of Avanti and change the attitude of the staff. In the end she managed it well, and said “I am really proud of the staff at Avanti and of Alex. They saw where they needed to change, they embraced it, and I have high hopes they will make the “Best of Boston” list.”

In the 3rd episode of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover Season 3, Tabatha traveled to Salon Vendome in Houston Texas. This was probably her toughest challenge yet as she had to deal with five owners in one salon!

These five feuding owners were making for one big problem in this upscale Texas location. Their selfish attitudes and bad customer service were driving away high-end clientele, and the salon was behind in rent and on the verge of closing its doors.

Salon Vendome is a booth rental salon, which means that each stylist in the salon pays a weekly rental to the owners. As the salon was behind in rent, it was causing financial problems in the salon and holding them back from making the changes they needed.

Tabatha was required to help these owners learn to work as a team and take responsibility for their business. So to get these owners on the same page and working together, she figured giving them money and telling them they were in charge of their own renovation would help. It did, but only temporarily!

Tabatha's Salon Takeover visits Salon Vendome

She tried several ways to get their business back on track and eventually succeeded. As she said in her blog:

Going back to salon Vendome six weeks later was like walking into another salon. Not only were the owners communicating and having weekly meetings, but they were offering education, had kept the receptionist, and were all proud and motivated and paying their rent! The salon was doing well, the stylists were all really happy, and I was really glad to hear from Jack that Janiece was doing well and working in a commission salon, which was helping her to stay responsible.
